Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

School Photos This Week:

Our students looked super smart for their class and individual shots this week. Thanks to parents, students and staff’s team effort so all were ‘dressed for success’!

Year 6’s Adventures in Hong Kong!

Our eldest Juniors have been pushing themselves out of their comfort zone in the New Territories with camping, abseiling, speedboat rides, hiking, ropes course challenges and more. Please check out some of their adventures on the College Instagram pages.

Year 3’s Celebration of Learning:

Thank you very much to all the parents who gave their time on Wednesday afternoon to take part in the Celebration of Learning Children had a wonderful time creating resources and planning activities for parents to be involved in. This was also an excellent way for them to consolidate their learning and to fill any gaps they may have had. Those who stayed to join the residential talk got to learn about the fun activities the Year 3s will be taking part in in April from Ms Ramsden (an experienced trip leader) and Christina from APA who will be our trip provider this year.

Poet Visit This Week:

This week we were thrilled to welcome the talented poet and children’s author Mark Grist to the Primary school. Beginning with an inspiring assembly on Monday. Mark captivated the students with his engaging approach to poetry, playing a fun rhyming game that had the audience of Years 1-3 thinking of single and two-syllable rhymes as they created a poem together. He also introduced the concept of assonance, and shared his book “Rhinos Don’t Cry” and delightful poem “Oranges” with the students.

In Year 2, Mark focused on Kennings poems, explaining the use of hyphens and the importance of the -er suffix in creating these unique poetic forms. The students were excited to create a Kennings poem for Mark’s puppy, Delilah. They finished the session by crafting their own Kennings poems in their Houses and based on their individual characteristics.

In Year 3, the students explored personification and delved into the theme for the EIM Poet of the Year competition, which the theme for this year is ‘Superheroes’. Mark discussed the differences between fictional and real-life superheroes, challenging the students to think creatively about everyday objects. They imagined a piece of Lego as a supervillain waiting to be stepped on and wrote poems from the perspective of objects in their homes, using their senses to personify them.

In Year 1, Mark shared his book “Bears Don’t Get Scared” with the children, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in creating art. He explained how authors work with illustrators and how the process can be slow but ultimately rewarding when working together over time.

Mark concluded his visit on the Friday by helping the students finish their poems, guiding the Year 2 students on how to utilize their bodies to perform their poems. He provided valuable tips on performance techniques, including breathing and footwork, ensuring the students felt confident and prepared. The students then performed their poems in their Houses in front of the rest of their year group.

Mark Grist’s visit was an unforgettable and enriching experience for the students in Year1-3, sparking their creativity and deepening their appreciation for poetry.

Year 5’s Warm Welcome for Ms. Caunce

Our Year 5 students showed their kindness and appreciation by organizing a special surprise to welcome Ms. Caunce back. It was a joyful moment filled with smiles, excitement, and heartfelt greetings, making her return extra special. A wonderful display of our school’s caring community!

Each week, this prestigious award is given to the class in a Year Group who has shown the greatest effort and attention to detail in dressing smartly and being well prepped for school. Are our black shoes shining; are shirts crisply tucked in, and are our ties snugly at our top buttons?

Year 4: 4R

Year 5: All 3 classes made a wonderful effort this week, so the award is shared between 5C, 5S and 5M.
